The funeral of M. M. Barnhart, a former resident of Shelby County, was held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning with burial in Jordan cemetery, Rev. J. L. Douthit officiating. Mr. Barnhart died at his home in Danville Sunday, Nov. 10 [1918] and the body was taken to the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reynolds. While he lived in this county he was engaged in teaching school and farming. He was born in Ohio, May 5, 1832, and at the age of 18 came to Illinois. At the opening of the Civil War he enlisted and during that conflict served his country faithful and well as a soldier. He was married to Miss Leah Syfert, and to them were born sixteen children – eight boys and eight girls. Seven of the sons and four of the daughters are left to survive their father and are: DeLos Barnhart of Monument, CO; Milton Barnhart of OK; Erwin Barnhart of Middlesworth; Harry, Clee and Ray Barnhart of Chicago; Bert Barnhart of Montana; Mrs. S. J. Ditzler of Middlesworth; Mrs. Edward Reynolds of Shelbyville; Mrs. Grace Holt of Mississippi and Mrs. Alice Reynolds of Chicago. Surviving also is a second wife, Mrs. Nora Tipsword Barnhart whom he married about 1903, about 40 grandchildren and more than half a dozen great grandchildren. Shelbyville Democrat – 14 Nov 1918
