MUNCIE--Julia Jeanne Burton Ayres Payne, 91, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 8, 2010 at Westminster Health Care following a brief illness.
She was born August 21, 1919 in Kearney, NE, the daughter of Loring Ermer and Edith Roberts Burton. She moved to Muncie as a child, graduated from Burris High School in 1937, received her Bachelor's Degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1941, and her Master's Degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1951.
Mrs. Payne retired from Ball State University in 1981 as an Assistant Director of Admissions after holding several other positions with the University for 25 years. Her career also included teaching high school in Logansport and Lowell, IN.
She was a charter member of College Avenue United Methodist Church and attended the Achates Church School Class there.
Julia had a lifelong affinity for dogs. She and her father and brother operated Roughacre Kennels for many years, training, breeding, boarding and showing a variety of breeds. She was a charter member of the Muncie Obedience Training Club.
She was a member of the child Guidance Club, "Mother's Club," Muncie, IN.
In retirement, Julia enjoyed remaining productive making fine quilts, needlepoint tapestries and knitting hats for family and charity.
She enjoyed winters with her second husband, HAP, and his family in their Cocoa Beach, FL. condo, where they entertained many family members and friends from the north.
Surviving are three children, Charles Burton Ayres (companion-Sharon Wendel), Losantville, Jane Ayres Sulanke, Yorktown, and William Rufus Ayres (wife-Martha Liddell Ayres), Granger. Eight grandchildren, Scott Ayres, Jim Ayres, Heather Ayres, Amber Ayres Reum (husband-Jeremy Reum), Alex Sulanke (wife-Kallie Kiger Sulanke), Austin Sulanke, Molly Ayres and Morgan Ayres; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Doris Burton, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, M. Rufus Ayres; her second husband, Horace A. "HAP" Payne; her mother and father; and three brothers, Morris, Robert and Donald Burton.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at College Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Chip Gast officiating. Inurnment will be later in Miller Cemetery, Middletown, IN.
Friends may call at the church fro 3 p.m. until time of service on Saturday.
Memorials may be directed to College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1968 W. Main St., Muncie, IN 47303 or to the charity of the giver's choice.
The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
