FALL FATAL TO WILLIAM WAITE

Aged Veteran of Civil War and Pennsylvania Railroad Service Succumbs to Effects of Injury.

William Waite, veteran Pennsylvania Railroad company retired employe who was in his 88th year, and who resided at 715 Fifth avenue, died at 12.40 o'clock this morning at the Altoona hospital, death following from the effects of an injury he received last Friday evening when the aged man fell near his home.

Mr. Waite fell on the sidewalk near his home suffering a fracture of the right hip. He was taken to the hospital but due to his advanced years, the shock of the injury proved too great and complications hastened his demise early today.

William Waite was born at Tuckahoe, now Bellwood, on April 24, 1845, a son of David and Rachel Waite. He was reared on a farm, later followed the occupation of a quarryman and later a Pennsylvania Railroad company shopman. He was last employed at the Altoona machine shop and was retired on reaching his 70th birthday. All his life, with the exception of the time he served his country during the Civil war, has been spent in Blair county. For almost a half a century he has been a resident of Altoona.

Mr. Waite enlisted in the Union army at the age of 18. He saw active service with General W.T. Sherman as a member of company C, 87th regiment. He participated in the battle of Cedar Creek and suffered a wound of the right hand. He had been twice married, first to Miss Emma Kitchen of Yellow Spring, who died thirty-four years ago, and later to Miss Katie Sones twenty-two years ago. His second wife died in 1929. Eleven children were born to the union, seven of whom are living as follows: Robert H., William E., John C., Mrs. L.C. Albright and Mrs. John English, all of the city, and David W. of Oswego, N.Y., children of the first marriage and Mrs. Thelma Rhule, the only child of the second union, also of this city. One sister, Mrs. Mollie Treese, resides at Hollidaysburg. He also has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Waite was a member of the First Church of Christ, Sixth avenue and Ninth street, he having been identified with that congregation for quite some time. The deceased also was affiliated with the Knights of Malta.
