"My said Father in Law, John Allen, Esq'r, was as to the family as I think I have been informed, of Welch Extract. What led the ancient father of father Allen to Settle on the Vineyard I do not recollect that I ever heard, but the Allen family became very Noted and Potent on Said Island, as the family of the Mayhews was before them. My father in Law had one Brother in particular whom I knew when I was a boy and who died I believe about the year 1730 he did shear I have been told, Sometimes and own as well as I hear 2400 Sheep a Year, it being an Island on which vast numbers of Sheep was kept. he [Ebenezer Allen] Lived in great Splender, his wife was Minister Russels Daughter of Barnstable.
"As to my Father in Law he was a very stirring driving gentlemen for the World. he acquired a considerable Estate, was Sheriff in his younger years, then a judge of he Inferior Court, a Major, then Lieut Colonel, was of a very quick temper, but Soon over, very contrary to his dear wifes temper which was calm and Mild and She being endowed with much peity and prudence, could almost at any time be influencial in calming her husband when he got into a frett. He was a person that pushed on his Children in very early Life to work and transacting business.
"He was a man of small stature."
