The following information came from a biographical portrait of Jonathan Landreth found in the book "History of Morgan County, Illinois," published in 1878. "Jonathan Landreth first came to Macoupin County in June 1833, was born in Virginia, 1800, on his emigration to Illinois in 1821, he married Miss Mary Thompson in Union County, IL. Jonathan and Mary Landrith had eleven children."
Jonathan and Mary were married for 58 1/2 years before death clained Jonathan in North Palmyra township on 3 December 1879. Mary died nine and one half years later and they are buried here in the cemetery he started on their farm.
A daughter, Mahala Landreth b. April 22, 1830 in Va. d. in 1890 in Morgan county, Illinois married William Gooch b. 1822-1824 in Lincoln county, Ky. and d. Sept 1886 in Plainview, Macoupin, Illinois. It is uncertain where they are buried. Their daughter Elvira Jane is buried in this cemetery.
Landreth Cemetery is located northwest of Modesto. In 1876 Jonathan Landreth deeded one acre to trustees and County of Macoupin for a burial ground.
