Prewar, having married in June 1848, he was a member of the Hope Fire Company, railroad meeting delegate, Bank of Commerce Director, Whig Convention delegate, a City Councilman, member of the Fair Committee, Old Dominion Steamboat Company Committee member and slave owner.
Postwar, he was Justice of Peace, a Rappahannock Dredging committee member, a wholesale & retail grocer (Hart, Hayes & Company) and later the Exchange Hotel Director; he was also a St. George's Episcopal Church Vestryman and member of the Bible Society. His wife worked in a private school for girls.
