Death Notice: KATHERINE THERESA BALOW

Katherine Theresa Balow, 89, Venice, formerly of Oak Park, IL, died June 3, 2008.

A funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Epiphany Cathedral, Venice.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1918, in Urbank, MN., one of nine children of Archibald and Gertrude (Becker) Benzinger.

Kay, as she was known to family and friends, married Frank W. Balow of Chicago, IL in 1939.

They had two sons and four daughters, all born in the Chicago area.

Kay and Frank moved to Venice in 1977.

Frank passed away in 1984.

Kay was a longtime member of Epiphany Cathedral Parish.

Kay is survived by six of her siblings, Delores, Marion, Helen, Grace, Ken and Elaine.

She was predeceased by Herb and Sally.

Kay was admired for her superb cooking and baking and she also had a green thumb in her garden.

Golf and bowling were her favorite sports, at which she excelled.

She was loved by all for her sweet disposition, sense of humor and loving, generous nature.

Her love and devotion to her extended family and her Catholic faith were hallmarks of her wonderful life.

Kay was adventurous and loved to travel all through the U.S., Europe and Asia, the highlight of which was the two years she lived in Australia, learning to play tennis at the age of 74.

She worked hard all her life, including years of employment at Treasury Drugs and Barclay Drugs in Venice.

Kay is mourned by her 6 children; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

These include Frank Balow and his partner, Elaine Cue, and his children, Tony and Stephanie; Pamela Balow and her husband, Hugh Tovar; Sherry Kelley and her children, L.J., Jennifer, David and Matthew; Holly and her husband, Daniel Robedeau, and her daughter, Katherine; Eric Balow; and Kyle Balow and her partner, Emil Espinosa.

Memorial contributions may be made to TideWell Hospice, National Parkinson's Foundation, or Epiphany Cathedral.
