Asbury Gaskill was just 18, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 9, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861.

Gaskill was discharged for disability (pneumonia after contracting measles while living in the barracks)on April 23, 1862, at Springfield, Missouri.

He died as a resident of the Kansas State Soldiers' Home at old Fort Dodge in Dodge City, Kansas.
