Lydia's father was the well-known judge Richard Dana (1700-1772), a prominent jurist involved in the pre-Revolution tax protests against the Crown; chairman of a committee formed to argue against the Stamp Act, and chief investigator into the Boston Massacre of 1770.
Lydia married John Hastings (1754-1839) who was a major in Lee's Continental Regiment during the Revolution, and they had seven children.
