He was educated at Phillips Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, and Pinkerton Academy in Derry, New Hampshire. In 1832 he went with his cousin Nathaniel Wyeth on an expedition into the wild country west of the Mississippi, and on returning settled in Galena, Illinois, then a mining town of about one thousand. He taught school, studied medicine and dentistry, practicing dentistry until 1849. That year he, his wife and surviving children traveled by river to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they took the emigrant trail to California. His daughter Mary died on the way. He engaged in business and practiced dentistry in Sacramento, California, from 1849 to 1851, and in Nevada City, California, from 1851 to 1854. In Nevada City, California, he joined three others in building the water works to supply the townspeople. In 1854 he returned to Galena, Illinois, and practiced dentistry until his death.
