In 1855, he was an attorney who won the election as councilman for the 57th District in New York. He gave it all up in 1860 to become an Organ builder, and owner of Roosevelt Organ Company. When he died in 1870, his son Hilborne became head of the company. When Hilborne died in 1886, his son Frank took charge of the factory. The company was sold in 1894.

Silas was the oldest of five brothers. His brother Theodore Roosevelt Sr. was the father of the Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the future President of the United States.
