In 1877 John donated one acre for the establishment of Cannady (or Kennedy) Cemetery. In 1879 he donated 3 more adjoining acres.

Married 1) Ruthy Ward and had children Fountain (1842), Mary (1845), James, and Elizabeth.

Married 2) Margaret A Edwards in 1851 and had children Emily (1853), Phebe J (1855), Amanda (1857), Minia (1869) and Maude H (1872).
