James Hall was born in Pickway county, Ohio, April 10, 1845. He came with his parents to Knox County, Missouri, Iin 1849, where he grew to manhood. He passed from his home at 410 South Jefferson Avenue, Iola, Kansa to the home beyond, December 30, 1929, aged 84 years, 8 months, 20 days.

January 4, 1864, he enlisted in the 110, Ill., Co. C, at McComb, Illinois. In the battle at Yellow Bayou, May 18, 1864, he received three serious wounds and sun stroke. After the war, he came with his parents to Kansas and settled in Cherokee County in 1867.

He was united in marriage to Phoebe Osborne, January 28, 1871 in Columbus, Kansas. Six children were born to this union, two sons and four daughters: Charles O. Hall of Ontario, Calif.; Clara Dennis of Bellflower, Calif.; Jennie Turley of Iola, Kansas; Wilbur Hall of Columbus, who died Jan 12, 1926, and Laura May who died at the age of 6 years.
