Mary McCallie Ware died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Brighton Gardens in Greenville, S.C.

Mrs. Ware was born in Chattanooga on June 3, 1907, eldest child of the late Professor Spencer Jarnagin McCallie, co-founder of McCallie School, and Alice Fletcher McCallie. She was a graduate of the Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga and Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga.

She was honored at age 86 by the Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross for years of work transporting cancer patients for treatment. She was an active member of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church in Atlanta until her confinement over three years ago to Brighton Gardens.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Robert Lane Ware, M.D. (captain, U.S. Navy). A brother, Spencer Jarnagin McCallie Jr., former headmaster of McCallie School, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lewis and Jacqueline Coble Ware of Greenville; daughter, Mary Fairfax Ware, of Venice, Calif.; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Peter and Marcy Ware, and their two children, Stephanie and David Ware of Raleigh, N.C.; grandson, Michael Ware and granddaughter, Leigh Ware LaPlante, both of Greenville. Also surviving are two brothers and their wives, T. Hooke and Eleanor "Queenie" McCallie and Dr. David P. and Maddin McCallie of Chattanooga; two sisters, Alice McCallie Pressly of Atlanta and Ellen McCallie Cochrane of Winchester, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
