Ray Edmund Berven, son of Edmund Alexander and Mabel Olene (Lee) Berven, was born January 27, 1917, in Lake Mills, IA. His family moved to South Dakota around 1920. He attended school in Baltic prior to entering the United States Army on February 22, 1940. He served honorably in Australia and the South Pacific and was discharged on August 2, 1945. Following his discharge he worked various jobs around Sioux Falls before becoming a kitchen worker at the Veterans Hospital. Around 1970 Ruby Johnson came to work at the Veterans Hospital kitchen. They began dating and on July 4, 1972, they married at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Because married couples could not work in the same department, he transferred to the custodial staff where he remained until his retirement in 1982 after 15 years of service.

Ruby and Ray lived in a trailer in Renner before building a house in Renner. After living there a short while, they moved back into Sioux Falls residing over the years at various apartments condos and ending up at their final residence on South Gateway Boulevard in Sioux Falls.
In his free time Ray enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He was also an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. Above all Ray loved to spend time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all those who shared his life.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Paul L. Johnson, Jr., San Francisco, CA; Thomas A. (Sherry) Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD; Timothy D. (Joyce) Johnson, Cedar Rapids, IA; Sharon Senst, Rochester, MN; and Susan Snapper, Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Edna Rowe, Winterport, ME.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Mabel Berven; wife, Ruby; sisters, Florence Mulcahy, Goldie Gray and Grace Cangi; and brother, Ordell Berven.
