ERNEST DE HERMAN

The many friends in Chariton were painfully shocked last Friday by the news of the sudden death of Ernest De Herman, of this city, which occurred that day at the Mercy hospital in Burlington, after a brief illness with pneumonia. He went to the hospital on Thursday and passed away on Friday.

He was a baker by trade and until a few weeks ago had been employed here in the restaurant owned by his cousin, W. K. Stull. At the time he was taken sick he was working for the Flick & Johnson Construction Company near Burlington.

He realized his condition was serious and asked the authorities to notify his relatives here and the Red Men at Bussey, of which order he was a member. Members of that fraternity went to Burlington and brought the remains of the deceased to Chariton and took them to the home of his aunt, Mrs. Kate Gleason.

Mr. De Herman's mother, Mrs. Florence Giles, resided in Talladega, Alabama, but had been spending the past week in St. Louis. Messages directed to her at that city failed to reach her until Tuesday. She started immediately for Chariton but did not reach here until this morning, too late for the funeral services which were held on yesterday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of Mrs. Gleason and were conducted by Rev. F. W. Henry.

Ernest De Herman was 24 years of age. He was born in St. Joe, Missouri, but came with his parents to Chariton before he was a year old. He was industrious and energetic and had a host of warm friends who will mourn his death and who will extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved mother and brother, Van De Herman.
