Sometimes called Aurore l'enfant martyre (Aurore, the child martyr). Aurore Gagnon (baptized Marie-Aurore-Lucienne), was the second of four children of Marie-Anne Caron and Télesphore Gagnon. When Aurore's mother became hospitalized with tuberculosis, Telesphore's widowed cousin Marie-Ann Houde, moved in with the Gagnons' with her six children. The following year, on November 6th, 1917 Joseph Gagnon, Aurores' younger brother died from mysterious circumstances at the age of two.Aurore's mother passed away 1918 and a week later Telesphore married Marie-Ann Houde. Aurore suffered immense abuse at the hands of her step-mother and father. Abuse that included a beating with an a poker, a whip, an axe handle, a switch, a knotted rope, a curling iron, a pitchfork handle, etc. September 1919 Aurore was hospitalized for more than a month at the "Hôtel-Dieu de Québec" due to a severe leg infection caused by a beating. When she was released back to her parents' custody the beating continued up till her death. Her death was due to exhaustion and blood poisoning from some 52 wounds inflicted by her stepmother and her father Télesphore Gagnon. Some people speculate that Aurore might have been poisoned by her step-mother. Since her death Aurore has become a popular cultural icon in Quebec with two notable films being released on her life and death. Numerous books have also been published detailing her life.
