EAST AMWELL TWP. -- Robert Kenneth Totten died on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at the home where he was born and resided all his life. He was 78. Born Jan. 29, 1929, a son of Fred H. and Madge Wilson Totten, he was a lifelong farmer. Mr. Totten had been battling cancer the last three years.

A member of the state Board of Agriculture, he was a member and former officer of the Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture, and a director of the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair. He was a key organizer of the fair, which succeeded the Flemington Fair in 2002. Starting in 1955 he served as community committeeman for the federal Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (now Farm Service Agency) moving up to county committeeman in 1966 and serving on the State Committee from 1977 to 1980. He was chairman of the New Jersey Farm Service Agency 2000-2001. Mr. Totten was active in the Hunterdon County Dairy Herd Improvement Association for nearly 30 years. After selling his dairy cattle in 1973 to specialize in raising grain and hay, he operated a warehouse for Farmers Brokerage and Supply. He started a liquid fertilizer and custom spraying business in 1966 with Lebanon Chemical and sold for Plant Food Chemical in Cranbury for 18 years. One of the founding members of the United Farmers and Landowners in 1987, he facilitated the settlement of their dispute with East Amwell Township over large-lot zoning suit. He was a member of the township Agricultural Advisory Committee for the past 10 years and served as a director with Farm Credit Service, active in the merger of four Farm Credit associations into First Pioneer Farm Credit. In recognition of his work for the Garden State's agriculture industry, the state ag board honored him in 2002 with its Distinguished Service Award.

He attended elementary schools in Unionville and Ringoes before graduating from Flemington High School in 1947. He received a certificate from Rutgers after a course of study in soil conservation and following service as a Civil Air Patrol scout during Word War II, he worked part-time with the Soil Conservation Service in Hunterdon for two years while farming with his father. He married June Kinney, whose parents had a Holland Township dairy farm, in 1951.

He was a member of the Amwell Valley Fire Company since 1952, serving as chief 1962-1965 and was a member and treasurer of the East Amwell Board of Fire Commissioners. He was a member and long-time trustee of the United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell at Larison's Corner.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, E. June Kinney Totten; three daughters, Linda Kopunek, Judith Grignon and Janet Totten, all of Ringoes; a son, Albert Totten of Clinton, Ill.; six grandchildren, Laurie Martin, Aileen Grignon, Katie Carman, Jarrett Totten, Kyle Totten and Ryan Totten; two great-grandchildren, Brooke Martin and Olivia Totten; and a sister, Katherine Bellis of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell. Interment will follow in Amwell Ridge Cemetery, Larison's Corner, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington.
