For three years from, 26 Aug 1862 to 5 Aug 1865, John W. Byars served in the Union Army as a private in the 81st Illinois Infantry, Company K, along with several of his friends and relatives, including his brother-in-law, Emri Taylor.

John married Electa C. Taylor on 27 Mar 1864 in Perry County, Illinois. They had four known children: Imri, Ada, Perry, and Abbie.
