He was a streetcar buff with a collection of photographs and publications on electric railways and was known for his knowledge of the history of the District of Columbia. He was the former owner of the fuel company, William King & Son, which was founded by his grandfather in 1835. The company was located at 1151 16th Street Northwest until 1947, when it moved to 29th and K Streets in Georgetown. In 1955 he retired, selling his firm to Colonial Fuel Co. He was a former member of the University Club and Kiwanis Club. At the time of his death he was a member of the Advisory Board of the branches of Riggs National Bank and of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown. He died at the age of 78 years on Tuesday, May 7, 1968 at his home, 3114 N Street Northwest. Survivors included two daughters: Alice King Watt (1917-2000) of 5620 North 27th Street in Arlington and Roberta King Johnston of Worcester, Massachusetts and two sons: William King IV of 5602 Wood Way in Sumner, Maryland and LeRoy O. King Jr. of Dallas, Texas and 10 grandchildren. Services were held from his residence and interment was private. The family requested contributions to Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers.
