From a story told by Garnet Denham Sargent:
"On August 31, 1862 a killer cyclone (tornado) blasted through Greene County, Illinois. The winds were so fierce that William Wesley could not hold the door closed by himself. His wife, Elizabeth, who was holding baby Obediah, came to help. Lightning struck the house at the door killing William, his wife Elizabeth, and baby Obediah, then proceeding through the floor and killing the family dog under the porch. At this time William was 41 years, 5 months and 17 days old. His wife was 30 years, 12 days and Obediah 1 year, 2 months, and 24 days old. The deceased were buried at the Jones Cemetery."
