Attorney and Business Executive. He was educated in Derby, Vermont, and worked as a clerk in Derby Line’s village post office when his brother Benjamin served as Postmaster. He taught school in Vermont and Quebec, attended St. Mary’s College in Montreal, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1870. He then spent a year in Washington, DC as a Clerk for the US House of Representatives while attending law school at Columbian University (now George Washington University). He completed his legal studies in the office of his brother Benjamin, attained admission to the bar in 1872, and began to practice in New York City. He later served as Counsel for the General Chemical Company, and he was the company’s president from 1910 to 1915. After retiring as President, he continued to serve on the company’s Board of Directors and resumed work as its General Counsel, and served in both positions until his death.
