Thaddeus Oliver Smith was born to Mary Alice née Headlee and Charles "Chas" T. Oliver Smith. Thad enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 4, 1917 and was a private in Battery "D" of the 63rd Artillery, C.A.C. (Coastal Artillery Corps) which was organized in December of 1917 from the Coast Defenses of Pudget Sound and was headquartered at Ft. Worden, Washington. In June 1918 the regiment moved to Camp Mills, New York and then in July sailed from Port of Embarkation, Hoboken, New Jersey. The 63rd C.A.C. was one of three regiments of the 36th Artillery Brigade, American Expeditionary Force, and was assigned to Army artillery duty. The 63rd Artillery was stationed in Limoges, France and trained there but was denied its time on the front lines due to the signing of the Armistice, ending WW1. The 63rd Artillery returned to the States in February 1919 going first to Camp Mills, New York and then went to Camp Lewis, Washington where they were demobilized. He was honorably discharged on March 21, 1919. After his return to the U.S.A., he married Lenore "Lena" Katherine née Tobacco in 1923 and they had one child Donald Thad Smith. Tragically his wife "Lena" was killed in a major car accident in 1937. He later married Eva Ruth née Sharp on October 8, 1938. He worked for Stimpson Lumber Company in Gaston, Oregon during the 1940's. He passed away at the age of 56. (Bio by: Jay Lance)
