Afton Syble Johnson Massey, 90, of Vernal, passed away on Tues., Aug. 24, 2010.

She was born on June 20, 1920, in Vernal to Perry Cleveland and Rowena Hatch Johnson. She married Cecil Hueling Massey on Nov. 13, 1937. They were later sealed in the Provo LDS Temple on March 27, 1982. They have celebrated 72 wedding anniversaries.

Afton worked at Shumway Parmacy, Rexall and Vernal Drug during her younger years. She enjoyed the outdoors and going camping, the Grand Canyon, Brown's Park, and hauling wood. She loved their "square dancing years." Before the loss of her eyesight she enjoyed reading, embroidery and being a homemaker.

She is survived by: (all of Vernal) her husband, Cecil; son, Cecil Dale Massey; daughter, LaRena (Bill) Caldwell; a sister, Zelma Chrisman of Casper, Wyo.; sister-in-laws Doratha Walker of Portland, Ore., Helen Suits of Sagle, Idaho, Frona Kay Miner of Melissa, Texas, and Reva Kimball of Salt Lake City. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Her son, Dennis Neal Massey, is deceased as well as her sisters Lorna Squire, Velaska Johnson and Jennie Lindley; and brothers Clifton Johnson and Alfred Johnson.

Funeral services were held Sat., Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Vernal 4th Ward LDS Chapel. Interment took place in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
