BUMGARDNER, George Henry – Death of G. H. Bumgardner -- G. H. Bumgardner died at his home in Geneva at 4 a. m. Sunday, March 8, 1914m aged 75 years, 2 months and 30 days. Mr. Bumgardner had been suffering from heart trouble for several years with occasional attacks of illness but was in about his usual health last week apparently. Saturday afternoon he shaved himself but did not come uptown. He answered a phone call or two that evening and sat up until 10 o'clock reading. His wife was awakened in the night by his heavy breathing. She was unable to arouse him and she called a neighbor and summoned a physician. Death came before the physician arrived. George Henry Bumgardner was born in Athens county, Ohio, December 9, 1838. He was married to Sarah M. Price August 5, 1866. To this union were born eight children, two of whom died in infancy. One, Mrs. Jennie Ward, died in 1908. His wife and the following children survive: Mrs. Maud Yost of Medford. Ore., Mrs. Lois Cotlett of Beatrice, J. A. Bumgardner of San Antonio, Tex., F. C. Bumgardner of Ong and G. A. Bumgardner of Beatrice. Eighteen grandchildren also survive him. Three sisters, one in Portland, Ore., one in Ohio and one in Kentucky and two brothers in St. Paul also survive him. Mr. Bumgardner served his country in the Civil war for about three years, enlisting August 14, 1862 as a member of Company B one hundred and sixteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He came to Fillmore county, Nebraska, in the fall of 1871 and homesteaded. He brought his family here in the spring of 1872. They lived on a farm for sixteen years. Mr. and Mrs. Bumgardner moved to Geneva in 1888 and have lived here since. Mr. Bumgardner joined the Methodist church at Coolville, O., at the age of seventeen and remained an active member of that church until his death. He was president of the board of trustees of the Geneva Methodist church for a number of years, holding that office at the time of his death. Mr. Bumgardner taught school in Ohio before coming west and taught many years in Fillmore and Thayer counties. He served a term as county commissioner here in 1880. Mr. Bumgardner was an active member of Wilson Post No. 22 G. A. R. of this city. He was twice commander of the post, in 1892 and 1912. He was adjutant in 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900. All of the children were present at the funeral except the daughter who resides in Oregon. The two brothers of the deceased, L. A. and E. L. Bumgardner of St.. Paul. Minn., arrived here Tuesday evening for the funeral. The funeral took place from the Geneva Methodist Episcopal church at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. L. Austin. The interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The funeral arrangements were in charge of Wilson post. G. A. R. The attendance at the funeral was very large.
