OBITUARY OF ERNEST COLSON

Ernest Colson was born on November 30, 1908 at a village called Rain which was located near Hamlet, Ne. He was the son of Hardy and Jennie (Ingold) Colson who had a family of three boys and one girl. Ernest grew to manhood in Chase and Perkins Counties and eventually the family moved to a farm south of Elsie and Ernest graduated with the first senior class to be graduated from Elsie High School in 1927.

He was united in marriage to Florence Nomer on April 2, 1933 at Elsie. They lacked one day of celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary. His union was blessed with four children: Betty Eastin of Clay Center, Ne.; Cara Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; Jeannie Hughes of Norway, S. Car., and Sid Colson of Elsie.

Ernie loved the challenge of farming and made this his life’s work/ His concern was for the betterment of all farmers and he served several terms on the ASCS Board; Ernie was always interested and involved in the activities of the Elsie Community. He served many years on the school board. As a young man he played on the Elsie baseball team and basketball team, in later years he became an avid bowler and was always a sports fan and booster for all of the area school teams. He was a longtime fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and looked forward to attending every home game.

Ernie was a member of the Elsie Methodist Church and for many years has enjoyed the fellowship and brotherhood of the IOOF Lodge.

Recently he had been in failing health and had undergone major surgeries. He passed away at a Denver, Hospital on Wednesday, April 1, 1981 having reached the age of 72 years, 4 months and one day.

He was preceded in death by his parents and was deeply saddened by the death of his mother, Clifford, on January 24, 1981.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, Florence; his children, and his 10 beloved grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; one brother, Robert of Gering and one sister, Freda Fleming of Casper, Wyo.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Colson of Elsie and her family; many other relatives and friends. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Services were held Saturday, April 4 from the Elsie United Methodist Church, the Rev. John Kilgore officiating. Music was by Katherine Carlson and Carol Robertson.

Casket bearers were Dennis, Glenn, Don and Leo Colson, Dale Nagers and Ken Flaming. Interment was in the Elsie Cemetery.
