The cemetery bodies were transferred to the Custer National Cemetery in Montana, when Fort Buford was closed about 1900. This grave was left marked along with several others, to indicate where the post cemetery at Fort Buford had been originally located. His body is actually relocated to the Custer National Cemetery, Montana.
The photo of George Fleury, Indian Scout, was taken in May 1881. The image was taken during the surrender at Fort Buford when Crow King and Low Dog returned from Canada and surrendered to the US Army (both were participants in the Battle of the Little Bighorn). "Post Interpreter George Fleury at Ft. Buford, Dakota, was shot and killed the 17th by Private Wood of Troup L Seventh Calvary. The shooting occurred in Fleury's quarters just after returning from a dance, to which Fleury was accompanied by his wife. Jealousy and whiskey the cause. Wood surrendered himself."
