Thomas Eckert was killed while crossing the bridge at Bald Eagle Creek on Milesburg Bridge three years to the day when his wife, Martha passed away. The train was Lock Haven Local freight.
Thomas worked for Valentines Iron Works in Bellefonte as a Forgeman from 1830 to 1875. Soon after he worked as a watchman at a local tannery until retiring in the early 1880s.
He was married to Martha McElain on March 12, 1840 in the Presbyterian Church in Bellefonte by Reverend Dr. James Harris Linn. They had six children. One, William Thomas Eckert, died during the Civil War from typhoid fever.
Thomas and Martha are buried in New Union Cemetery in Unionville.
