James E. Burns, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Burns, was born in Carl County, Indiana, January 19, 1859. Here he grew to manhood and at the age of 27 years he came to Richland County where he was employed for some time as a farm hand. He later purchased a farm in the town of Akan. On April 29, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Martha Fosnow. To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons.

A few years after his marriage he exchanged his farm in the town of Akan for a farm in the town of Sylvan. The family resided here until his faithful wife departed this life Dec. 25, 1926. Since that time he has made his home with his son, Walter, Near Boaz.

Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, he was taken suddenly ill and passed away the following morning, Feb. 3, 1932, having reached the age of 73 years and 23 days.

His passing marks the departure from this life of the last member of his parental family. He leaves to mourn his passing two daughter, Mr. Guy Bailey, and Mrs. Gerald Anderson, of Viola, and two sons, Ora and Walter Burns, of Boas, One daughter Vada, preceded him in death in 1908. His is survived by nine grand-children and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held from the home and at the Sylvan U. B. church, February 5, the Rev. Merton Tanner conducting the services. The body was laid to rest beside that of his wife and daughter in the Sylvan Cemetery.
