Hamer Lewis, 61, former employee of the American Petroleum company of this city, died at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 3, 1943, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at Edgewood, the Rev. T. R. Smith officiating, and burial was made there.
Mr. Lewis was born near Osterdock, Iowa, March 26, 1882, and on Feb. 4, 1906, was married to Emma Hesner, by whom he had two sons, Capt. Henry Lewis of Camp Carson, Colo., and Herman Lewis of Edgewood. Mrs. Lewis died at Edgewood June 2, 1915. On Jan. 18, 1922, Mr. Lewis was married to Mrs. Dollie Wendel Goodman, and they resided at Edgewood until 1928, when they came to Manchester, living here until 1942, when they returned to Edgewood. Surviving are the widow, the two sons by the first marriage, a brother, George Lewis of Edgewood; and four sisters--Mrs. Emma Zearley of Edgewood, Mrs. Mary Saylor of Hannibal, Wis., Mrs. Angie Sweeney of Dacoma, Okla., and Mrs. Martha Purdy of Corinne, Calif. Preceding Mr. Lewis in death were his first wife, one brother and a sister. For many years prior to coming to Manchester Mr. Lewis was engaged in farming. He bore a good reputation and will be missed by many friends.
