Orville grew up in the Liberty Twp. attending the Sunnybrook country school and the Fertile-Beltrami High School in Fertile, Minnesota. Following his schooling he entered the United States Navy in about 1949. During his service career he was stationed in the Pacific region: California, Hawaii, the Philippines, and Korea. He worked as an airplane mechanic attaining the rating of Chief Petty Officer. He retired in about 1969 from the Navy and moved to Fertile. In the early 1980’s he worked as an electrician in Beulah, North Dakota. He moved to St. Cloud, FL, in November, 1991.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Asssociation, VFW of Crookston, Minnesota, and Varnes Lutheran Church of rural Fertile.

The funeral for Orville Hammer, 63, St. Cloud, Fla., formerly Fertile, Minn., will be at 11 Tuesday in the Varnes Lutheran Church near Fertile. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 Monday in the Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile. He died Friday, Sept. 18, 1992.
Mr. Hammer was born Aug. 6, 1929, near Fertile, where he grew up and attended school. In 1949, he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in California, Hawaii, the Philippines and Korea. He worked as an airplane mechanic before retiring in 1969 from the navy and moving to Fertile. He worked as an electrician in the early 1980s in Beulah, N.D., and married Yvonne Taylor July 4, 1989, in St. Cloud. He moved to St. Cloud in 1991.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Randy, Fertile; a stepdaughter, Debra Edwards, Kissimmee, Fla.; and three brothers, Rueben, Santa Nella, Calif., Harvey, Erskine, Minn., and Charles, Fertile.

Airman Orville Hammer received the Air Medal for action in Korea. He completed 20 patrol and reconnaissance missions over enemy territory in a PB4Y-2.
