Colonel Samuel Beck, born January 3, 1796, in Randolph County, North Carolina, was the son of Jeffrey Beck, Jr. and Mary Ann McDaniel. Records indicate he was the youngest son and last child born in the Jeffrey Beck family.

When Samuel was about ten years of age, his family moved to South Carolina. Jeffrey, his father, formed and led a wagon caravan to Pickens, South Carolina, which consisted of Jeffrey's family and the families of his married children. Samuel's youth was spent on his father's plantation on the Little River in Pickens, Oconee County, South Carolina.

The Beck family lived in close proximity to the James Langston/JoAnna Davis Langston family. In 1812, he married Tobitha Langston in Pickens County, South Carolina. Nine known children were born to this union with the first four being born in South Carolina:

As an adult, Samuel was an unusually large man. It was said he was six feet tall, had dark hair, black eyes, a fair complexion, and weighed over 300 pounds.

In 1822 Samuel bought land in Rabun, a newly formed county in Georgia. This was just across the river and south of where their parents lived in South Carolina. On this land he and Tobitha built their first home on Dick's Creek. It was a crude cabin of hewn logs and puncheon floor.

Samuel died July 3, 1876, in Rabun County, Georgia, and was buried in Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Warwoman, Rabun, Georgia.
