Mrs. Bowers was born in Sanford, Fla., to the late Joe Wathen and Barbara Berner. Survivors include her children, Judy Marsh and her husband, Frank R. Marsh III, Lisa Ferrer and her husband, Chuck Ferrer, all of Virginia Beach, Steven Carpenter of Venice, Calif., Curt Carpenter of Weedsport, N.Y., Kent Carpenter and his wife, Cecilia Carpenter, of Virginia Beach; her siblings, Mary Grant of St. Simons Island, Ga., Barbara Lilly of Bryson City, N.C., Jeanette Campbell of St. Petersburg, Fla., Shirley Wathen of Orlando, Fla., Joe Wathen of Littleton, Colo., and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Pete and Maggie Bon of Lewes, Del.; her grandchildren, Kessy, Clayton, Nolan, Don, Nicole, Jessica, Amy, Kali; and a great-grandchild, Emily, also survive her.
She met and married Frank Donald "Don" Carpenter in Sanford when he was stationed there during World War II. After the war they moved to Syracuse, N.Y., and had five children together. Don passed away at age 39. Bettie worked in Syracuse as a financial advisor and a dance instructor. She was an active member of the Socialaires Club and Holy Family Church in Camillus. She moved to Virginia Beach in 1973 and married Robert F. Bowers. Bob passed away in 1985. In Virginia Beach, she worked as a travel agent for the Travel House of Virginia. While not on the dance floor, she was either traveling, skiing, playing tennis, golfing, playing bridge, socializing or spending time with family. She was an active member of the Church of the Holy Family in Virginia Beach and their Renew Group, the Solo Club and the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Thomas Quinlan. Burial will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the home of Judy and Frank Marsh after the service, 1733 Lovett's Pond Lane. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
