CIVIL WAR VETERAN

He served in Civil War in Co. D, 1st Cav, MO State Militia. He enlisted on Feb 15, 1862 at age 26, leaving his wife and two young sons behind. He earned the rank of Sergeant before being discharged Apr 19, 1964.

He was born in Ohio (perhaps Brown or Clermont county) and moved to Putnam Co, Missouri, with his parents, in 1856. He was a cooper, a trade that had to do with making barrels, casks, and kegs to store goods as varied as grains to whiskey to gunpowder.

He married Elizabeth Scarbough in approximately 1855. They had two children: Joseph B and George A.

They lived in the Unionville area their whole lives after moving from Ohio in 1856.

(The FLT initials on top of the headstone is the logo for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.). The letters stand for: Friendship, Love and Truth. The three-link chain symbolizes how these three attributes are closely related and linked.)
