Carol, died peacefully. She was born to Alvin and Pearl Johnson. The family moved to Battle Creek where she attended school and met her beloved husband, Curtis Main. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in education and taught first grade for a year in Lakeview and a year in Ann Arbor. Carol and Curt were married in June 1946 and had 64 happy years together, raising their children Melinda Kelly (Bruce), Kathleen Kurfess (Jef), and Bill Main (Kathy). Their grandchildren Noah, Megan (Tyler Glidden), and Nathan Kelly, Will and Ned Kurfess, and Brian, Matt (Angie) and Justin Main are a great joy to them. She is also survived by her brother Philip S. Johnson (Alice), nephew Tom Johnson (Marie), and niece Kate (Jay Biltz), as well as many other relatives and friends.

Carol was a loving, lively and artistic person who took a great interest in the world around her, looking with the eye of an artist and the heart of a mother. She loved to entertain friends and family with a warm welcome and delicious food and drink. She was an enthusiastic shopper and generous giver of gifts, loved holidays and festive occasions and dressed with colorful style. She learned to paint and spent many happy hours taking art classes with friends and painting in her basement studio, as well as collecting art on trips around the country and the world. She particularly enjoyed the color and style of South western art and loved Santa Fe. An avid reader, she joined Great Books and found a group of friends who shared her curiosity about people and enthusiasm for literature. Carol and Curt traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states as well as parts of Europe, Africa, and South America.
They spent many happy times at their cottage on the Platte River, up north. Family and friends visited for fishing, swimming, and floating down the river, with wonderful summer meals and evenings around the campfire. Their children and grandchildren reunited there every summer.

There was a memorial open house at the University Club of MSU, East Lansing, MI on Wednesday, September 1.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol's name to the Capital Area Humane Society or Sparrow Hospice Services, Lansing, MI or a charity of your choice. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing.
