William, who resided in Milton, Delaware, served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve aboard the S.S. Lammot duPont during World War II.

William "Died Of Exposure" in a lifeboat after the sinking of the S.S. Lammot duPont by a German Torpedo on April 23, 1942.

He had served for five years in the Merchant Marines at the time of his death.
