MAGNOLIA -- Harold Melvin Pope, Sr., 83, of Magnolia died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center of Goldsboro.

He was born March 20, 1925, in Duplin County to the late Lloyd Ernest Pope, Sr. and Rosa Mae Snow Berger.

A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Community Funeral Home of Rose Hill and at other times at the home of Harry Pope. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Community Funeral Home Chapel of Rose Hill. Burial will follow in the Devotional Gardens.

He is survived by a son, Harold Melvin "Harry" Pope, Jr. of Magnolia; a granddaughter, Beth Miller and husband, Kurt Miller; two great-grandchildren, Caitlin Miller and Phillip Miller of Garner; a sister, Daphne "Pat" Pope Jones of New Bern.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Simpson Pope and brother Lloyd Ernest Pope, Jr.

Melvin was Mayor of Magnolia from 1975-1983. He served as chief of the newly formed fire department in 1950 and served for 40 years. He served as a member of the rescue squad for 25 years. Melvin attended Oak Ridge Military Institute in Greensboro. While serving in the Army Air Corps. he was the first pilot on a B-24 Bomber.

Melvin was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Magnolia Baptist Church, P. 0. Box 96, 208 E. Main St., Magnolia, NC 28453.
