Valentine was one of 9 children born to Colonel William Oakes & Mary (Weymouth). In 1853 Valentine graduated from Dartmouth College. He taught at the Foxcroft Academy from 1853 to 1854; read law with his brother, Albion Paris Oakes, of Waldoborough, Maine; began his practice at Damariscotta, Maine; left Maine in March, 1859, and went to Minnesota.
Valentine enlisted in the 12th U.S. Infantry on December 23, 1861. He was shot dead during the "Battle of Gaines' Mill", in Hanover Co, VA., near Richmond, VA. This was also known as the "First Battle of Cold Harbor" or the "Battle of Chickahominy River". Valentine was one of 894 Union soldiers killed during this battle, where Robert E. Lee claimed victory.
