AGNES KAY "BETTY" RUTHER

Agnes Kay Burns was born April 11, 1924 to David and Agnes Key Burns in Falkirk, Scotland, and died December 23, 2009 at Kearney, Nebraska of congestive heart failure.

She received her education and two years of college in Falkirk. At the beginning of World War II she was given the choice of joining the Army or working in a manufacturing plant. She chose the latter and worked as a heavy crane operator during the war.

She was married to Clarence Ruther May 16, 1945 and arrived in the United States in 1946, and has lived in the Springview area continuously since that time. They lived on the Ruther Homestead until moving to Springview in 1956, where they owned and oeprated the Eleventh Street Liquor before retiring in 1982.

Betty's hobbies included reading, bird watching, golfing, and knitting gifts, which she generously shared with family and friends. She also liked to travel, and they were able to make trips back to her homeland as late as 1995. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #98 and held various offices.

Survivors are her husband Clarence of Springview; one sister Margaret and husband Colin Douglas; one brother Jimmie McNeill and wife Barbara; and a sister-in-law, Brenda McNeill, all living in Falkirk; a sister-in-law, Elaine Ruther of Valentine, NE; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Mary; and three brothers, Lawrence, John and James.
