Richard was the son of Washington Adams Harney (1810-1872) and his second wife, Mary A. (Lane) Harney.Lebanon Public Library's first librarian was Mr. Richard H. Harney. He was born in Kentucky in 1841. He served in Co. E 72nd Indiana Volunteers which was a part of the Wilder's Brigade in the U.S. Civil War. He moved to Lebanon in 1880 and married Julia Nichols (for whom Lebanon's Harney Elementary school was named) in Lebanon in 1883. Mr. Harney taught in Lebanon's schools, was principal of Lebanon High School and was superintendent of the city schools. He became the city librarian when LPL opened in June 1905. He was one of the organizers of the Lebanon Literary Club and remained a member as well as head librarian until his death on May 4, 1909. Mr. and Mrs. Harney had a son, Thomas Richard Harney. They lived at 309 N Park Street. The family is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
