Mrs. R.L. Whittington Died Here Monday
Mrs. R. [ees] L. [ittleton] Whittington, a resident of Bedford and community for more than half a century, died at her home Monday, March 22, after a few days illness.
The funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Hogue. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.
Mattie E. [llen] Conner, daughter of Capt. Thomas R. and Susan E. Conner, was born March 13, 1852 near Rose Hill, Mahaska county, Iowa, and departed this life Monday, March 22, 1937 at the age of 85 years and 9 days.
When she was 12 years of age her father died in the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Ark. Her mother lived but six months after the news of his death was brought to the family. She then went to live with an aunt, Mrs. Robert Bass, and later with her guardian, Judge Rinehart in Oskaloosa.
In 1873 she went to Indiana to visit relatives where she met and was married to Rees L. [ittleton] Whittington on July 2. To this union were born two daughters, Maude and Hallie, both of whom, together with the husband and father, survive her. She also leaves a grandson, six great grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.
Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Whittington went to Jamestown, Ind., and then to Indianapolis where they made their home. Later they moved to Reelsville, Ind., and from there to a farm near Crawfordsville, Ind.
In 1882 they moved to Iowa where they resided on a farm one and a half miles east of Bedford, a homestead which they yet own. In 1892 they moved to Bedford where they resided until 1906. They then returned to a farm a half-mile east of Bedford where they resided until 1910 when they removed to Bedford where they have since resided.
Mrs. Whittington united with the First Baptist church in Bedford in 1888 and has been faithful in its membership and teachings ever since.
