John M. Laurie was born in 1839 in Pennsylvania to parents James Laurie and Isabel Scott Laurie who immigrated from Durrisdeer, Dumifries-shire, Scotland in 1819. John was the second of eight children. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War in 1864-1866. His original hand-written journal of his service during this period was given to the Brown County Historical Society and may be seen there on display.
