Obituary
John G. Ells was born in Sweden in the year 1839, and at the age of 15 years, came alone to the United States, settling in Illinois where he worked for several years as a common laborer. At the beginning of the Civil Way he enlisted in the 10th Illinois Infantry, and served until 1865. After the war he came to York county and in 1870 settled on a homestead four miles southeast of York. In the year 1877 he was married to Mrs. Carrie Monson at Stromsburg, Nebr. After their marriage they went to establish their home on the farm neat York. To this union were born six children - four daughters and two sons. One son Oscar Edwin, died at York in 1907, at the age of 27years. The wife and other five children survive the departed husband. The children living are Mrs Wil Stafford, Mrs. Herbert Reisinger, and Miss Minnie (Millie) Ells of York; Mrs. C. E. Sawyer of Hillsdale, Wyoming and Herman Ells of Bradshaw.

Mr. Ells was stricken with paralysis fourteen weeks ago, and from that time failed rapidly, his death occurring Saturday.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. Herbert Reisinger, one mile south of York. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
The departure of Mr. Ellis marks the passing of a soldier of war, a soldier of peace, and one of York county's highly respected pioneers. While the last few years of Mr. Ells' life was not marked by any particular activity, yet his heart beamed with love for the flag he fought to preserve, and he never hesitated to raise his voice in behalf of that which was for the betterment of the community in which he lived.

This post was organized at York, Nebraska, January 23, 1880, with the following named Comrades as Charter Members: Ells, John G. Late Sergeant Co. E, 10th Illinois Infantry
