Captain Peter Pelham was the soldier that caught the eye of 17 year old, Martha Coffin. He was a resident in the boarding house of her mother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with his brother, Atkinson Pelham. Atkinson was a student at the Medical College in Philadelphia and invited his brother to stay at the boarding house to recuperate from illness.

Captain Pelham won her heart and they were soon married. He died soon after the marriage and she became a young widow. Later Martha became a very famous abolitionist and suffragette working along side of Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. After his death Martha gave birth to their only child and daughter, Marrianne Pelham Mott. She also became famous as an abolitionist and suffragette alongside her mother and aunt Lucretia Coffin Mott.
