Former Chairman of Housing Authority Was Leader in Mizpah Congregation
Maurice C. Poss, 60, prominent Chattanooga realtor and many years chairman of the Chattanooga Housing Authority, died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 25 Belvoir Avenue.
Mr. Foss had resigned his post as chairman of the housing authority in June because of his health, and was succeeded as chairman by Frank Huffaker. He had been chairman of the Authority since 1941 and had been a member since 1938.
His real estate firm was Poss Brothers, with offices in the Hamilton National Bank Building.
Mr. Poss was a native of Chattanooga, the son of the late Ike and Mrs. Annie Schwartz Poss.
He was long a leader in Mizpah congregation of Julius and Bertha Ochs Memorial Temple and had served as president of the congregation.
Mr. Poss was a captain in the quartermaster corps during World war I and had long been an active member of Summers-Whitehead Post of the American Legion. He was a past commander of the post and also or a legion post in Sarasota, Fla.
Mr. Poss was a member of B'nai B'rith Lodge and of the Elks Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Meyerhardt Poss; daughter, Mrs. M. L. Weil Jr., Huntsville, Ala.; granddaughter, Ann Elizabeth Weil; son, Ensign H. M. Poss, attending the navy supply school at Bayonne, N.J.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Julius and Bertha Ochs Memorial Temple with Rabbi Abraham Feinstein officiating.
