He was educated at the public schools of New York City and Clinton Liberal Institute, Florida, NY. Employed at Messina, Sicily when the Civil War began, he returned to NY and assisted in the organization of the 47th New York Volunteer Regiment.
He served in the Commissary, Quartermaster, and Adjutant General Departments, and as Aid-de-camp on staff of General Alfred H. Terry.
After army service, he engaged in the steamboat business.
In 1875 he married Alice Chadwick Boardman. They had a daughter, Julia B. and a son, Edwin Chadwick.
He resided in Garden City, NY.
He died in London, England of a heart attack November 27, 1908 and was interred at Greenwood Cemetery on February 3, 1909.
