He was born October 3, 1925 in Oquawka, Il. the son of Emil W. and Hazel F. Decker Jern. He married Betty Melberg. Later married Phyllis Sullens Bond in 1966 in Galesburg, Il.
Milton is survived by his wife Phyllis, two sons Arthur and Lisa Jern of Abingdon, Il., Geoffrey Jern of Adel, Ga., three step sons Mike Bond (Johan Ewalt), Greg and Lisa Bond all of Galesburg, and Doug and Tanya Bond of Atlanta, Ga., one brother Robert and Vera Jern of Monmouth, Il., twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Bernie Jern, one step son B.J. Bond, one daughter Patricia Ferguson, one brother Phillip Jern, and one sister Ruby Jern.
He was a Locomotive Engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years retiring in 1994. He served in the US Army from January 18, 1944 to April 29, 1946 and September 24, 1951 to August 31, 1953. He received the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, Overseas Bar, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, and was a Life Member of the Civil Air Patrol serving as the Personnel Director for the State of Illinois.
He was a member of the Alpha Lodge #155 and a Life Member of the V.F.W. Post # 379.
Private Memorial Service Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sarah Parker officiating. Graveside services will be at 12 noon Saturday at the Oquawka Cemetery Oquawka, Il. with Military Rites conducted by the Monmouth VFW Post #2301 and the Monmouth American Legion Post # 136. Family and Friends and Neighbors are invited to Greg and Lisa Bonds home from 2-4 PM Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Unit at the Marigold Health Care Center.
