After an illness of nearly a year, Mrs. Britamore Laird, 65, wife of Marcus J. Laird, prominent farmer of the Cummings neighborhood died at 11 o'clock last night at the Atchison Hospital.
Mrs. Laird had been a patient at the Atchison Hospital on differant occations previous to being taken there last night, shortly befpre she died. She had spent time in Atchison living with her daughter, Mrs. Edith Hamner.
A daughter of William & Sarah Ann Quiett Cummings, Atchison Co. pioneers, Mrs. Laird was born Aug 20,1866 at Cummings. She spent her entire life in Atchison Co. and in Cummings Community, which was named after her parents, who came to Ks. in the 1850's. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania & her mother was born in Illinois.
She was married to Marcus J. Laird, also son of pioneer Kansans, James B. & Marinda Martin Laird, on Oct. 15, 1884
At the time of their marriage, Mr. Laird was in the merchandising buiness in Cummings & was also postmaster there for thieteen years.
Five children survive Mrs.Laird.They are William J. Laird of the home; Mrs.Edith Hamner, Atchison; Mrs.Meda Reynolds, Atchison; Mrs. Anna McKanna of Kansas City; & Mrs. Blanch Gordon of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two brothers, Charles Cummings of Turner, Oregon & William Cummings of Los Angeles, & two sisters, Mrs.Mary Honza of Kansas City & Mrs. Isabelle Askren of Hughson, California. Fifteen grandchildren & one great grandchild also survive.
Mrs Laird was a most splendid woman. She devoted her life to her husband & family, always first thinking of their welfare. She was loved by the entire community of Cummings,
where she spent all her life. She was ever ready to help those in need, doing charitable acts in a modest & quit manner. She was a member of the Baptist church in Cummings since 1895. Funeral services,which have not been made as yet, will probably be held at the church Friday. The body is at the Sawin & Douglass undertaking parlors.
