Mary Caroline Byers Moore Jones was the daughter of James Kuykendall Byers and Ary Ann Burch Byers. She was born in Habersham County, Georgia and moved as a child with her parents to the Cahaba Valley outside what is now Birmingham, Alabama. Her grandfather was Joseph Judson Byers, a Baptist minister, who established most of the Baptist churches in northeast GA in the 1820s and in the Birmingham area in the 1830-1840s. She first married Bluford Lafayette Moore (1831-1861) who died in 1861 leaving her with 5 children; one died in 1867 at age 15. She suffered through the Civil War with her children and married on 24 Aug 1865 to Jim Jones, a Confederate veteran who had been wounded in the legs. They had 4 children who survived to adulthood and a 5th (Ary) who died in infancy. They moved after 1880 from Sterrett, Shelby County AL to Barling, Sebastian County AR.
