Roanoke World News. Wed. March 20, 1968

Lawrence Clad Chapman, 56 departed this life Wed. March 20, 1968 in a Roanoke hospital. He was a member of Greene Memorial Methodist Church, and was assistant manager for the Howard Johnson Restaurant for the past ten years. Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife, Vella K Chapman, Roanoke, a daughter, a sister Mrs. Helen Chapman Counts, of Holston, Va. He is also survived by two grandchildren. Entombment will be in Sherwood.

Although I was only 8 years old when granddaddy passed away, I still remember him well. Sitting on the front porch in the evening, putting a dime (not a penny) in my loafers, and going with grandmother in the evening to get a chocolate milk shake at Highs Ice cream polar before picking granddaddy up at Howard Johnson. I remember he used hair tonic, which I sometimes can smell to this day.

He was a soft spoken man with a big heart.

Although grandmother, Aunt Helen, Uncle Ramey, Aunt Zellza are all with you now, your family is still growing. You now have five great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and a great great grandson on the way. You would be proud of your large family now.

We still love you granddaddy and miss you terribly.
